Producer Appreciation: Key Wane

When it comes to producers using the keyboard/piano as the main instrument of a beat, most think of Zaytoven. I, on the other hand, think of Key Wane. He has a true talent of incorporating chords and channeling the essence of a particular mood he wants to portray in a song. I first discovered Key Wane on Big Sean’s mixtape ‘Detroit’ back in 2012. However, I didn’t pay too much attention until ‘All Me’ by Drake became a single and found out that the man behind that amazing beat was indeed Key Wane. After that point, I made sure that I listened to his entire catalog. I was so impressed by his melodic chords and his technicalities of putting together a beat that I almost knew for a fact that he took Music Theory or Ear Training classes. After proposing this question to him during his Q&A on Twitter a while ago, he did in fact take those classes. Key Wane is extremely underrated especially for how well he puts together beats. Not to mention that he is very humble about his accolades and accomplishments. ‘Higher’, ‘Play No Games’, ‘Money & Powder’, ‘Make/Problems’, and ‘Partition’ are beats I enjoy the most and make sure to revisit every so often. I really hope he gets the notoriety that he deserves in the near future. In the meantime, I will be patiently waiting for another Key Wane production. 34826651_1955596771331873_7010362774354132992_n.
