J. Cole – KOD

This post took WAY too long for me to upload, but I wanted to make sure I fully digested this album before I wrote a review of it.

Cole’s 5th studio album KOD is the best project he has dropped thus far. I never was a big fan of J. Cole to begin with. I guess you could say I was a casual fan, at best. When I first played this album, I had no expectations whatsoever. During the first run, I thought to myself that this album really has no songs to skip. Each song has a meaningful message that I can relate to. The song that resonated with me the most is ‘ATM’. I love how he adopted the new-age styled cadence of these newer rap artists that he talks about in the song ‘1985’. The beat and the lyrics in the song really go hand in hand. Another one is ‘Kevin’s Heart’. He mastered the art of capturing the emotion in infidelity and the temptation that leads up to infidelity. The overall feel of this album is extremely well thought out. I noticed with several songs how he’s experimenting with his voice in a very theatrical way. Cole creatively came up with three different meanings for the title KOD; Kids On Drugs, King’s Overdose, and Kill Our Demons. Going into the album with one of three meanings of the title gave me a very interesting perspective. I’m really quite happy as to how this album made me a solid, confident fan of J. Cole.
