It seems like Vince Staples came out of nowhere with this album. I was literally taken aback when I seen people speak on this new Vince Staples album and even more so when I played it. Vince did a 180 in my opinion with FM! compared to his last album Big Fish Theory. I wasn’t the biggest fan of Big Fish Theory whatsoever and that was due to the EDM/experimental beats that I thought didn’t fit him. Kenny Beats, who is one of my favorite newer producers came in and blessed the project with beats more suitable for Vince to rap on. FM! is almost reminiscent of Summertime ’06…almost, however the up-tempo vibe I’m getting from this album definitely makes it stay in its own lane.
I really appreciate the approach that Vince took on FM! It’s genius to go about an album as if it’s debuting all of the songs over the radio (Big Boy’s Radio to be exact). Even teasing a song from Earl Sweatshirt and Tyga, also including guests calling into the radio station, all as this being an album is super creative. As far as the songs go, this is hands down an album with no skips. I can vibe out to this album comfortably without reaching for my phone and searching for another song to listen to. I enjoy the features that Staples has on here which are; Kehlani, E-40, Ty $, and Jay Rock. They’re strategically placed within this album which is much appreciated. This 11-track album isn’t too long and more importantly it isn’t overwhelming. Music-wise, Vince Staples is back.
